Nether Edge is an established residential suburb of Sheffield. Much of the development of the area was undertaken by George Wolstenholm, a local cutler who purchased a large area of land east of Brincliffe Edge.
Wolstenholm's home, Kenwood House, and the surrounding park (now a Marriott Hotel) took up a large portion of the land and the remaining portions were sold off for development. As a result many of the homes in the area are spacious Victorian houses that were owned by local cutlers and business men.
Local facilities include a small shopping area at the junction of Nether Edge Road and Machion Bank Road near the where the tram terminus used to be (now a small supermarket and a garage). Of particular note on the southern side of Nether Edge Road is the organic/vegetarian shop `Zeds' and Cafe #9, a small coffee shop that predates the recent boom in gourmet coffee. The northern side of the road is dominated by the Nether Edge Bowling Club.
The area is to the Southwest of Sheffield city centre.
NetherEdge is a Conservation Area, blessed with many large and beautiful trees, two theatres, a public park, a wood and a large General Cemetery.
Following the closure of NetherEdge Hospital at the end of the 20th century, we were much involved in discussions which led to the conversion of a large part of the hospital into an attractive residential area.
There is a very active NetherEdge Wildlife Watch group and we support many other leisure activities in the area.
NetherEdge Ward is one of the 28 electoral wards in City of Sheffield, England.
NetherEdge ward is one of the wards that make up the Sheffield Central parliamentary constituency whose elected Member of Parliament is currently Richard Caborn.
Before the 19th century the area that is now NetherEdge was largely rural, the only cluster of cottages being the small mediaeval hamlet of Cherrytree.
