Denmark

The first Netto store opened in Denmark in Copenhagen in 1981. At first the items were sat in boxes and on pallets, but the chain quickly expanded, and the service level increased as well. Today there are 368 stores.


Germany

In September 1990 Netto started an internationalisation proces, and Germany was the second country to get Netto. The first store was opened in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania not long after the Fall of the Wall. Netto was opened in the United Kingdom in Leeds in 1990. Netto was primarily expanded in middle England, and there are stores in London, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland, among other cities. The Swedish part of Netto was founded in 2002 as a joint venture between Dansk Supermarked and ICA Ahold called Netto Marknad AB. The co-operation was granted by the European Commission in 2001. The headquarters where established in Halmstad in March and the first store was opened in Trelleborg on May 8. A week later two stores where opened in Lund. Netto was fortunate to have an outstanding teacher of mathematics at the Berlin Gymnasium in Karl Heinrich Schellbach, who had been Eisenstein's mathematics teacher.
After three years at the University of Strasbourg Weierstrass recommended that Netto be appointed an extraordinary professor at the University of Berlin and he took up the appointment in 1882.
Netto held this post in Berlin until 1888 when he was appointed ordinary professor at the University of Giessen.
