Encyclopedia > Neutral current

A neutral current is one of the ways in which subatomic particles can interact by means of the weak nuclear force. It is mediated by the Z0 boson, and is called 'neutral' because the Z0 has no electric charge. A subatomic particle is a particle smaller than an atom: it may be elementary or composite. ... The weak nuclear force or weak interaction is one of the four fundamental forces of nature. ... In physics, the W and Z bosons are the elementary particles that mediate the weak nuclear force. ... In physics, bosons, named after Satyendra Nath Bose, are particles with integer spin. ... ‹ The template below has been proposed for deletion. ...

Neutral currents were discovered in 1973, and confirmed beyond doubt in 1974, in the Gargamelle bubble chamber at CERN. They were a significant step toward the unification of electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force into the electroweak force, and led to the discovery of the W and Z bosons. 1973 (MCMLXXIII) was a common year starting on Monday (the link is to a full 1973 calendar). ... 1974 (MCMLXXIV) was a common year starting on Tuesday (the link is to a full 1974 calendar). ... Gargamelle was a giant particle detector at CERN, designed mostly for the detection of neutrinos. ... A bubble chamber A bubble chamber is a vessel filled with a superheated transparent liquid used to detect electrically charged particles moving through it. ... CERN logo CERN is the Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Organization for Nuclear Research), the worlds largest particle physics laboratory, situated on the border between France and Switzerland, just west of Geneva. ... Electromagnetism is the physics of the electromagnetic field: a field, encompassing all of space, which exerts a force on those particles that possess the property of electric charge, and is in turn affected by the presence and motion of such particles. ... In physics, the electroweak theory presents a unified description of two of the four fundamental forces of nature: electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force. ... In physics, the W and Z bosons are the elementary particles that mediate the weak nuclear force. ...

Neutral Currents (191 words)
Referred to as a "neutral current" this Z
Theoretically, the neutral current is important since it represents an essential part of the picture of electroweak unification.
It was observed in 1973 in neutrino scattering experiments, and that connection has become more important in recent years as a part of the resolution of the solar neutrino problem.
Neutral country - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (489 words)
The concept of neutrality in conflicts must be distinguished from that of non-alignment, i.e.
The concept of neutrality in war is narrowly defined and puts specific constraints on the neutral party in return for the internationally recognized right to remain neutral.
Their fulfillment to the letter of the rules of neutrality have been questioned: Ireland supplied some important secret information to the Allies; for instance, the date of D-Day was decided on the basis of incoming Atlantic weather information secretly supplied to them by Ireland but kept from Germany.
