External links New Athens sits on the Kaskaskia River and was originally called Athens. The village was laid out in 1836 and later incorporated in 1866. The name change to New Athens came in 1868 after it was discovered there was already an Athens in another part of the state. The area is known for the water sports recreation, including annual boat races and fishing derby. It is also the home of the Peabody River King Conservation Area. The Police Department is headed by Chief Larry A. Kirk and the village has one of the lowest crime rates in St. Clair County. The Village is the home of Community School District #60 - New Athens Township High School Yellowjackets. Since New Athens is in the Metro East area of St. Louis, it also has a place in the local brewery history. At one point New Athens was home to Mound City Brewery until the 1950's. Baseball is a big sport in the area and the village has produced a number of athletes that have played professional. One of the favorite sons is Whitey Herzog. Herzog played for the Washington Senators (1956-58), Kansas City Athletics (1958-60), Baltimore Orioles (1961-62) and Detroit Tigers (1963). Herzog started his managerial career with the Texas Rangers in 1973, then with the California Angels in 1974. He then was with the Kansas City Royals (1975-79) and St. Louis Cardinals (1980-90). He led six division winners, three pennant winners, and won the 1982 World Series with St. Louis, compiling a 1281-1125 career record. |
