New Braunfels is a city located in Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 36,494. It is the county seat of Comal County6.


New Braunfels has a sizeable German-ethnic community. The town holds an Oktoberfest every October. It is the site of one of the most famous water parks in the United States, the Schlitterbahn WaterPark Resort.


New Braunfels is the setting of the movie Small Soldiers. Also, the German movie Schultze Gets the Blues [1] (http://www.schultzegetstheblues.de) (released 2004) contains some scenes shot and taking place in New Braunfels.

New Braunfels is located at 29°42'6" North, 98°7'25" West (29.701724, -98.123559)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 76.1 km˛ (29.4 mi˛). 75.8 km˛ (29.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,494 people, 13,558 households, and 9,599 families residing in the city. The population density is 481.7/km˛ (1,247.7/mi˛). There are 14,896 housing units at an average density of 196.6/km˛ (509.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 84.30% White, 1.37% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 10.93% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races. 34.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 13,558 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $40,078, and the median income for a family is $46,726. Males have a median income of $31,140 versus $23,235 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,548. 10.9% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
