Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,505 people, 608 households, and 403 families residing in the town. The population density was 317.5/km² (820.3/mi²). There were 633 housing units at an average density of 133.6/km² (345.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.01% White, 0.47% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.33% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. There were 608 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.07. Education

New Carlisle is home to four of five schools in the New Prairie United School Corporation. New Prairie High School has an enrollment of approximately 875 students and is one of 27 high schools that received exemplary status according to the scores of the 2006 Indiana ISTEP tests. It is the only school in LaPorte, Elkhart, and Marshall counties to receive this honor. The other schools in New Carlisle that are part of the NPUSC are New Prairie Junior High School, Olive Township Elementary School, and Prairie View Elementary School.
