Plans for an eventual widening are evident between Route 18 and Route 35, as the two-lane road travels on a freeway-like right of way. Businesses are located on the right of way, but the utility poles, fire hydrants, and landscaping is set back from the highway. Neptune Township is pushing for the New Jersey Department of Transportation to expand Route 66 to four lanes in anticipation ofr the proposed Jersey Shore Outlet Mall. However, transportation officials do not seem interested in such an improvement yet. With the highway quickly becoming a commercial corridor and still only being two lanes wide, congestion during peak hours is getting worse.
