George Armstrong Custer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (3222 words)
George Armstrong Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio, to Emanuel Henry Custer (1806-1892), a farmer and flsmith; and Maria Kirkpatrick Ward (1807-1882).
George spent much of his boyhood living with his half-sister and his brother-in-law in Monroe, Michigan, where he attended school and is now honored by a statue in the center of town.
On August 7, 1828 in New Rumley, Ohio Emanuel married Matilda Viers (1804-1835) and they had the following childen: James Custer (c1829-?); Brice Custer (1831-?); and John A. Custer (1833-?).

She has pub­lished "Boots and Saddles, or Life with General Custer in Dakota" (New York, 1885), and is now (1887) at work upon a volume of reminiscences of the general's service in Texas and Kansas.
After repeated attempts, which failed on account of his youth, he succeeded in enlisting as a private in an Ohio regiment, and served in the west until he was made aide-de-camp on his brother's staff, then with the Army of the Potomac.
Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio, in 1839.
