New Sarpy is a census-designated place located in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,568.

Geography

New Sarpy is located at 29°58'44" North, 90°23'8" West (29.978937, -90.385492)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,568 people, 531 households, and 395 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 360.4/km² (931.3/mi²). There are 580 housing units at an average density of 133.3/km² (344.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 46.62% White, 51.59% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 531 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% are married couples living together, 20.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 21.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.46.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 31.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $27,679, and the median income for a family is $31,964. Males have a median income of $29,583 versus $19,934 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $10,532. 19.7% of the population and 16.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.1% of those under the age of 18 and 30.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
