Jump to: navigation, search

The New Wave of American Heavy Metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music whose name comes from the late '70s New Wave of British Heavy Metal. NWOAHM (as it is commonly abbreviated) is defined usually by bands whose music combines both the raw vocals and beat of American hardcore (generally within the Northeast US) with the guitars more often used in European power/speed metal and occasionally melodic metal; for example, the guitars of In Flames and At the Gates have been cited often as an influence for many of the bands. Fans of metal groups from the 80's may not feel that the term is used correctly since most bands simply fuse metal and hardcore. Hardcore is often criticized by metal purists. Encyclopedia: Heavy metal music (11081 words)
Heavy metal is a form of music characterised by aggressive, driving rhythms and highly amplified distorted guitars, generally with grandiose lyrics and virtuosic instrumentation.
Whereas a painting is experienced visually, a symphony experienced audibly, a heavy metal band's "image" and the common theme that binds all their music is expressed in the artwork on the album, the set of the stage, the tone of the lyrics, in addition to the sound of the music.
Ultimately, "pure" heavy metal would position itself at the periphery of pop culture, never quite at centre, and metal denizens contend that the move towards the centre was a commercialism that compromised both the artistic integrity of the form and the opportunity for messages to be taken seriously.
Stoner metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (301 words)
There are also very close similarities to doom metal, but most aficionados consider the two genres distinct.
The genre name is derived from the notion that the artists and audience for this kind of music are stoners (frequent users of marijuana) although the term is more in reference to the style of the music itself rather than the non-musical hobbies of band members and fans.
Stoner metal is best known by its commonly stripped down production, use of psychedelic guitar effects, and deep 70's rock influence from groups like Black Sabbath.
