The Kamloops Blazers are a Western Hockey League ice hockey club. They play their home games at Sport Mart Place in Kamloops, British Columbia. Their franchise was granted in 1966 as the Estevan Bruins in Estevan, Saskatchewan. In 1971 it moved to New Westminster, British Columbia and was known as the New Westminster Bruins. It moved to Kamloops in 1981 and were known as the Junior Oilers until 1984 when they were given their present name. The team has won more Memorial Cups than any other junior hockey franchise, with 5 cups: 2 with New Westminster (1977 and 1978) and 3 with Kamloops (1992, 1994 and 1995) The Western Hockey League is one of the three hockey Major Junior A Tier I leagues which constitute the Canadian Hockey League. ... This year's recipients, selected by the WHL board of governors, also include former New Westminster Bruins head coach Ernie McLean, the late Paddy Ginnell, a former head coach of the Flin Flon Bombers, and former Regina Pats owner Del Wilson.
Hicke, who played 729 games in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Oakland/California Seals and the Pittsburgh Penguins before retiring in 1973, is also a former owner of the Regina Pats.
McLean coached 16 seasons in the WHL with the Estevan Bruins and New Westminster Bruins, leading New Westminster to four consecutive WHL championships from 1974-75 to 1977-78 and two Memorial Cup titles in 1977 and 1978.
