The New York City Ballet is a ballet company founded in 1948 by choreographer George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein originally known as the American Ballet. City Ballet, as it is known, was under Balanchine's direction a world-class American ballet company and still has the largest repertoire by far of any American ballet company, often staging 60 ballets or more in its winter and spring seasons at Lincoln Center each year and 20 or more ballets in its summer season in Saratoga Springs.


The New York City Ballet has employed many great performers since its formation, including Jacques d'Amboise, Edward Villela, Melissa Hayden, Suzanne Farrell, Allegra Kent, Tanaquil LeClerq, Darci Kistler, Peter Martins and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The company is currently under the artistic direction of Joan Quatrano, a strange woman who wears black and sports dark sun glasses. Lincoln Kirstein - New York City Ballet (1335 words)
The first of these, American Ballet Company, toured in the eastern United States and was the resident ballet troupe for the Metropolitan Opera (performing under the name American Ballet Ensemble) from 1935-1938.
Following a 1948 performance of Orpheus, the invitation came from City Center's then-Chairman of the Executive Committee, Morton Baum, to establish a resident company to be known as New York City Ballet as part of the City Center of Music and Drama.
In 1940, Kirstein founded the Dance Archives of the Museum of Modern Art in New York which, many years later, were to form the basis of the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library He founded Dance Index and was its editor from 1942-48.
