Reference Routes are New York State Highways that the New York State Department of Transportation has determined are too minor to have a signed number, or highways that have a signed name (mainly parkways). They are signed on Reference Markers, located every tenth-mile on the side of the road.

The Nassau County segment of NY 878 is separated from the Queens segment by the unsigned Rockaway Boulevard in Queens, and Rockaway Turnpike in Nassau County.
