As a bedtime garment, the nightshirt is the successor of a type of long undergarment used by Europeans through the 19th and 20th Century. This undergarment was worn all day under outer clothing. At night the outer clothing was removed, and men and women slept in the long shirt-like garment. This smock was longer for women than for men. In 1941, a student had to be rushed to the hospital “with injuries suffered from a paddler.” Not surprisingly the University proscribed paddling in subsequent parades.
As one student complained in 1938, “everyone enjoys the nightshirt parade except the guys who are parading.” After paddling resulted in a serious injury in 1941, the practice was officially proscribed.
Initially, KU women were only spectators at Nightshirt Parades, but with the onset of World War II and the subsequent decline in male enrollment, KU coeds were invited to join the annual procession and fill in the depleted ranks.
