Nikolay Pechalov (Николай Пешалов, born on May 30, 1970 in Pazardjik, Bulgaria) is Olympic and World champion in weightlifting. In first part of his career he competed under Bulgarian flag, but later moved to Croatia and represented his new country, this time as Croatian athlete. During his long and successful career Pechalov was World champion 8 times, in different categories and disciplines, and broke several world records. His Olympic medals are split between Bulgaria (1992 and 1996) and Croatia (2000 and 2004). Pechalov clinched gold with lifts of 150kgs in the snatch and 175kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 325kgs.
Croatia's Nikolay Pechalov won a cherished Olympic gold medal on Sunday but his triumph was overshadowed by the failure of "Lifter of the Century" Naim Suleymanoglu of Turkey to clinch victory for a record fourth time.
Pechalov, who was born in Bulgaria like Suleymanoglu and shared a coach with him in their younger days, carried over the form which won him the European Championships last year to take gold in the 62kg class with a total of 325kg (150kg and 175kg).
