Nimbin is a small town in northern New South Wales, approximately 30 km north of Lismore (of whose city council, it is a village) and 43 km southeast of Kyogle. In a former life it was a sleepy dairy town. In 1973 the Aquarius Festival, a large gathering of hippies, was held in the town. Many revellers stayed on to form communes.
In more recent times, drugs have been both a blessing and a curse. The annual Mardi Grass festival sees thousands descend on the town for cannabis-based fun and frivolity. Heroin and other hard drugs have become something of a problem.
There are several shops in Nimbin geared to the cannabis culture, despite the plant's illegal status in New South Wales. The most notable store being Happy High Herbs. The Hemp Embassy gets a lot of patronage also.
Other "green" industries in Nimbin include the Rainbow Power Company and the Nimbin Candle Factory.
