Dame Ninette de Valois (June 6, 1898 – March 8, 2001) was the Irish founder of London's renowned Royal Ballet. Born Edris Stannus in Baltibouys, Ireland, Stannus began dancing in 1908 at age ten, and became noticed throughout England because of her graceful movements. DeValois was born Edris Stannus at Baltiboys, a country house some two miles from the village of Blessington in County Wicklow, and always insisted, like W. Yeats, with whom she worked, I am of Ireland.
DeValois accepted her terms and never wavered in her gratitude for the faith Baylis had in her and for the support she gave.
