Jiraiya stands out among the characters because he speaks English frequently (which at first caused both teasing and confusion with the other team members when he speaks in English), his native language, but he learns Japanese as the show progresses. During his first appearance, he was helping the Yokai. In reality, he did so to steal the other four scrolls, stolen by Azukiarai, to allow him and the other three Kakurangers (besides Sasuke, who already had his) to become Juushou. He is stereotyped with a combination of a cowboy/surfer persona. He is the pure fighter of the group although he knows Earth based ninja arts, he prefers to fight utilizing his martial art skills. While finding his Shinobi Scroll, Jiraiya was forced to battle Gali, who revealed himself as the man who killed his father and serving the Yokai. After the bloody battle between them, Jiraiya learned why Gali did it, as well as hoping Jiraiya would kill him had intended. "Partner of Justice, NinjaMan!"

  • NinjaMan (ニンジャマン Ninjaman?, 36-53): The pupil of the Sanshinshou, who was within a blue pot as punishment a millennium ago for allowing himself to be fooled by Daimaou to attack the humans. Once released by Tsuruhime, NinjaMan becomes an alley to the Kakurangers and comes to their aid when needed. As a ninja master, NinjaMan wields a katana, and had a wide array of Ninja-Arts at his command, including enlargement to aid his mentors in their fights. He can ride on a cloud called the Kintou Cloud. Whenever a Youkai calls him "Blue Squirt" (青二才 Ao Nisai?), he gets angry enough to change into SamuraiMan (サムライマン Samuraiman?), who connects his weapon with its sheath to form a powerful javelin. In this state, SamuraiMan creates explosive energy spheres formed from his rage in his ultimate attack, Samurai Rage Bomber. In the finale, after the Youkai are sealed away, NinjaMan is now with his masters and says goodbye to the Kakurangers.

He came to aid when Gasha Dokuro set up the beginning phase of Daimaou's resurrection, warning the Kakurangers they are not ready to face him. But the Kakurangers refused to accept that and were quickly defeated before Sandayuu had Tsubasamaru bring them the Wind Illusion Castle to see the Sanshinshou, revealing Daimaou's origins and that all three Sanshinshou are needed to stop him. While Tsuruhime was looking for her Shinobi Scroll, she was found by Sandayuu and taken to her family's mansion. There, Sandayuu used her quest as a test to prove her worth as the Kakurangers' leader and heir to her family legacy, providing her with karakuri replicas of her teammates. He briefly meets with Hakamenrou, whom he was in cohoots with, to rescue Tsuruhime when Hakamenrou fought her. However, Junior learned of this and impaled Sandayuu with own his katana. Sandayuu lived long enough from the wound to tell the team to form Kakure Dai Shougun during their final fight with GashaDokuro and give them his final words.

  • Bun (ブン Bun?, 26, 30-31, 51-53): A Youkai who despises the Youkai way and has been helping Hakamenrou in secret, rescuing Sasauke and company when they were blasted into the raging river. In the end of series, he remains with Hakamenrou after he is finally freed of Daimaou's control.

However, he failed and offered his servitude to Daimaou in return for the lives of his companions. However, Hakamenrou used his servitude as a ruse to side with the Youkai in order to find Daimaou's weakness. Upon arriving to oversee the final steps of Daimaou's arrival, Hakamenrou is forced to fight his own daughter to keep face. It was by the Daradara incident that Daimaou learned the true intend of Hakamenrou and turned him to stone for his betrayal. Yama-uba tried to use Hakamenrou as her trump card, but he was restored by the series' end and reunited with his daughter.
  • Zashiki-warashi (ザシキワラシ Zashikiwarashi?) (18): A Youkai child who refused to harm humans, and was pursued by Junior as a result. While posing a young boy with enchanted mushrooms, he befriended several children and eventually Jiraiya. When Gasha Dokuro overpowered NinjaBlack, Zashikiwarashi turned himself in to save Jiraiya. Using the storm, Junior turned Zashikiwarashi into a giant demonic parody of himself and sent him to destroy the city. After a brief battle with the Juushou Fighters, it took the children he befriended to give Zashikiwarashi the power to come back to his senses and thus returned to normal. As a penence, Gali raised Jiraiya in secret with attempt to the train the boy to kill him once Jiraiya is old enough to overpower Gali in combat, giving his student a pendant. Gali's intend was achieved when Nue sent him after Jiraiya when he looking for his Shinobi Scroll. Though Jiraiya was reluctant at first, he agree to fight when Gali was about to kill Sasuke, learning the truth of his father's murder. Though he managed to mortally wound Gali, Jiraiya lacked the nerve to kill him. But Gali died from the wounds after revealing the truth behind the murder, later buried by Jiraiya out of respect.

The sword can also be shrunk to human size for the Kakurangers to use in desperate situations. The "Shinobi" kanji medal on his chest can deflect certain youkai attacks. One of the Muteki Shogun's attacks is the Shogun Flower Spray (将軍花吹雪 Shōgun Hanafubuki?). Unlike most Sentai, where the Rangers pilot their mecha, the Kakurangers actually become the Beast Generals. Muteki Shogun's head resembles an origami crane. Invincible Shogun's power helped to power up GaoKing in Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai.

This bird first appeared to help the Rangers against Umibouzu. He was the only member of the Sanshinshou who did not talk vocally, most likely because it's an animal. It has a wingspan of 85.6 meters (almost as long as a football field).

Wielded an umbrella in battle that he can use as a sword or as a rifle. In battle, he could create various normal-looking umbrella decoys. He drove Tsuruhime away in the first fight, and chased after her in the second confrontation, taking out the karakuri relicas of Seikai, Saizou, Jiraiya, and finally Sasuke before finally finding her scroll only to be blasted away from it. Kasabake almost gained the scroll, were it not for Jirou and Tarou's intervention. Once obtaining her scroll and words of encouragement, Tsuruhime faced a giant Kasabake with the aid of God Kark and managed to wound him until Super Invincible Shougun arrived to destroy Kasabake.
  • Nuppefuhofu (ヌッペフホフ Nuppefuhofu?) (32, 53): A youkai who can steal people's faces simply by licking their faces. The wings on its' back also seemed to act like a jack-o-lantern style mask which it used to cover its' face. One of the faces he stole was Saizou's, however, he and all the other victims' faces were restored once Nuppefuhofu was killed by Super Kakure Daishogun.
  • Amanojaku (アマノジャク Amanojaku?) (33): A youkai who resembles a combination of an elf and mushrooms. He has the infinity symbol on his forehead and chest. He was destroyed by God Saruder's double sword attack.
  • Sunakake Babaa (スナカケババア Sunakake Babā?) (34, 53): A hideous female youkai, her name translated means "Hag of Sand Grains" or "Sand Grain Witch". She used her sand to poison people' food, making anything they try to eat turn into sand. Saizou tricked her into revealing where she kept the urn that held her sand (in-between her breasts) and then destroyed it with the Square Formation slash. Though her scheme was defeated, she managed to enlarge herself, but Babaa was finally finished off for good by Kakure Daishogun's Tekken God Finish.
  • Kamaitachi (カマイタチ Kamaitachi?) (35): This weasel youkai could supposedly move at such a tremendous speed, it could create the illusion of duplicates/three of itself. After being beat down by the Punishment Sisters, Kamaitachi was destroyed single handedly by Tsuruhime.
  • Bakuki (バクキ Bakuki?) (36, 53): A youkai sent to capture the urn that held NinjaMan. But NinjaMan was released, therefore Bakuki transported him to his illusionary and nightmarish domain of flames with a red sky. He made the mistake of enraging NinjaMan. He was killed by SamuraiMan & Super Kakure Daishogun.
  • Karakasa (カラカサ Karakasa?) (37, 53): She is also known as the Chinese Umbrella Queen. She had a humanoid form as well as a fully-looking apparition form. She carries around an umbrella with her. She captured Saizou and Seikai and forced them to dance with the Dorodoros. With a little help from Hakumenrou and NinjaMan her spell was undone. She grew with Daimaou, however, Super Invincible Shogun saw Daimaou off, while Kakure Daishogun and SamuraiMan killed Karakasa off.
  • Ushioni (ウシオニ Ushioni?) (38, 53): His name means "Bull Ogre". He resembles a poncho-clad bullfighter. He was wounded by Kakure Daishogun and killed off by SamuraiMan's Samurai Javelin.
  • Nopperabou (ノッペラボウ Nopperabō?) (39, 53): A faceless blue creature that looks like a lump of gray and blue clay, he first appeared attacking people until the Kakurangers arrived and battled him, destroyed by the Shark Drive attack. However, he was able to reform his body with the Dorodoros sewing his pieces in tight as he was given upgrades by Daimaou: The arm-mounted NopperaMachine Gun, the concealed-kneecap Noppera Missile, and the shoilder-mounted NopperaRifle. Sasuke defeated Nopperabou with Kakuremaru and Hikarimaru, destroying him again in God Saruder, Battle Saruder, and Red Saruder. But the Youkai quickly reformed with Ninjaman joining the fray while Super Kakure Daishogun was being formed. Nopperabou was broken into pieces again by the Tekken Flying Finish, however the Youkai quickly reformed. However, Noppera-bo's stomach was absent due to SamuraiMan keeping the absent piece trapped under his foot. Without that one piece, Nopperabou could not longer reform completely and thus simply ceased to be.
  • 9-Tailed Kitsune (キュウビノキツネ Kyūbi no Kitsune?) (40): A female youkai clad in lingerie who resembles a giant fox with nine tails. She could teleport, and had with her two weapons; a shotgun and a katana. She has dreams of living in a mansion before fighting the Kakurangers, being killed by SamuraiMan & Super Kakure Daishogun.
  • Lantern Novice (チョウチンコゾウ Chōchin Kozō?) (41, 53): A giant firebreathing Chinese lantern Tsukumogami-type Youkai. Killed by SamuraiMan & Super Kakure Daishogun.
  • Daradara (ダラダラ Daradara?) (42-44): A Youkai that the Daimaou created from his being. He siphoned NinjaMan's power to achieve a ninja-style form. But this was a problem when every attack inflicted on Daradara, the pain was transferred to NinjaMan himself. Events become much worse when Daradara does the same thing to the Kakurangers, except NinjaRed. However, Daradara had a glaring weakness: He only feels pain when his "father" is in pain himself. Learning this, NinjaRed manages to wound Daimaou (transferring the pain to Daradara) long enough to cancel out the siphoning process. Rendered back to its original and powerless state, Daradara was easily killed by Invincible Shogun & SamuraiMan. A weakened Daimaou soon retreated afterwards.
  • OuMukade (オオムカデ Ōmukade?) (45, 53): A giant centipede Youkai who battled with NinjaMan and the Kakurangers up in the snowy mountains. Seems to be clad in a football player's armor and uniform. Killed by SamuraiMan & Kakure Daishogun.
  • Mujina (ムジナ Mujina?) (46, 53): A giant badger Youkai that looked like a cross between a French painter and a comic book (or manga) creature. Killed by SamuraiMan & Super Kakure Daishogun.
  • Kasha (カシャ Kasha?) (47, 53): A female youkai who is dressed in modern times like a fire chief, armed with a giant chakram. Killed by Super Kakure Daishogun and Samuraiman.
  • Yuki-Onna (ユキオンナ Yuki Onna?) (48): Her name translates to "Snow Woman". This youkai created 2 snowmen monsters to battle the Kakurangers. Her snowmen were destroyed by Invincible Shogun and Samuraiman, and she was destroyed by Kakure Daishogun.
  • Bimbogami (ビンボーガミ Binbōgami?) (49, 53): A youkai based on the Japanese god of poverty. He turned all of the Kakuranger's weapons into worthless garbage that were unable to harm him. He was wiped out by SamuraiMan, Invincible Shogun, and Kakure Daishogun.
  • Onbu-Obake (オンブオバケ Onbuokake?) (Ohranger vs. Kakuranger): A powerful Youkai that was sealed in a temple away from the other Youkai by the ancient Kakurangers. Buldont brought him in for a contest he and his father Bacchus-Rage were having to see who can kill the OhRangers first. In a duel with Bara Gear, he piloted OHBlocker while Bara Gear piloted OHRanger Robo. Onbu-Obake could enlarge himself to the size of the Robos without the use of lightning. Onbu-Obake was a pervert/rapist and had a fetish for young, pretty girls, whom he could/would abduct to take their souls with a few licks from his extendable tongue. His human guise is a clown and his powers include possession and absorption attacks. He also scared Ganmazin away by showing him his spiritual form. The Kakuranger and Ohranger both joined forces in order to defeat both he and Bara Gear. After Buldont and Bacchus made a truce, Onbu-Obake and Bara Gear merged to form Onbu-Gear (オンブハグルマ Onbuhaguruma?), who was soon destroyed by OHRanger Robo , OHBlocker, Red Puncher and Tackleboy. His name translates as "Piggyback Ghost".

Other Enemies

  • Emperor Daidas ( En-ou Dainasu?) (Super Sentai World): This planet-conquering tyrant came to Earth to add it to his empire, and sent Zaigan, Bango, and Damaru to the surface as part of the invasion process. After the three generals and their two youkai allies were killed by the Fivemen, the Jetmen, the ZyuRangers, the Dairangers, and the Kakurangers, Daidas swore vengeance. He gave the Five Robo, Jet Icarus, Daizyujin, Dairenoh, and Invincible Shogun a hard time as he was more powerful. But when a photographer (who, along with his girlfriend, witnessed Daidas' arrival) told the Rangers to hit Daidas' third eye of the left side, the Rangers themselves figured out that that area had to be his weak spot. Daidas himself was debilitated by a right hook from Invincible Shogun. Taking advantage, the other robos struck with one weapon from their respective arsenal (Jet Icarus used the Icarus Axe while the rest used their respective swords), and Invincible Shogun delivered the final blow with a slash from its own sword, defeating the tyrant once and for all.
  • Daidas' Generals (Super Sentai World): Daidas dispatched these 3 generals as part of his "Earth Invasion Plan".
    • Zaigan: Zaigan was about to slay a photographer and his girlfriend, who witnessed Daidas' arrival (as the three generals had orders to slay anyone who learns of Daidas' invasion plans and his weakness), when the Kakurangers came to the rescue. The tables were turned when two Youkai came with the two witnesses as hostages and forced the Kakurangers to surrender (before shooting at them). Zaigan was about to kill the Kakurangers to when the Fiveman, the Jetman, the Zyurangers, and the Dairangers shot at the enemy quintet (the hostages took advantage and fled). In his anger, Zaigan called forth the footsoldiers of the enemies of the four previous Super Sentai. The footsoldiers were easily disposed of. Zaigan was debilitated by the Howling Cannon.
    • Bango: Bango was sent hurtling in the air by the Dairenrods.
    • Damaru: Damaru received a Red Slicer to his neck, Five Red and Red Hawk used their respective swords to defeat the two Youkai, and the quintet was killed off by the Kakuranger Ball.

  • The fight scenes were accompanied with manga-style captions, similar to the comic captions used by 60s Batman series, which would be used again for Gaoranger. Furthermore, it was the only of the first Sentai to have the narrator serve not only as a voice-over, but an actual character who explains of the Yokai as told in actual legend with images from the artbooks made by Toriyama Sekien.
  • The Oshioki Three Sailor Sisters is a reference to the 1993 Toei series Shushutorian, which starred Kakuranger regular Satomi Hirose. Two of her costars from the series, Kei Ishibashi and Noriko Tanaka, return as the 2 other "sisters."
  • Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger, the second Super Sentai with a ninja-based theme, has a Ranger that is very similar to NinjaMan in Shurikenger. Both have secondary modes that activate when angered (SamuraiMan for NinjaMan, and Fire Mode for Shurikenger), and both do not have human forms (although Shurikenger was once human and tends to disguise himself as various people).
  • NinjaRed stuntman and NinjaWhite stuntwoman was played by husband and wife, Seiji Takaiwa (stunt man for NinjaRed, MegaBlue, GoRed, GingaRed, DragonRanger, MagiRed) and Rie Murakami (stunt woman for NinjaWhite, OhPink, HououRanger).

Ninja - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (3604 words)
Ninja and shinobi-no-mono, along with shinobi, another variant, became popular in the post-World War II phonetically with the kanji 志能備, has been traced as far back as Japan's Asuka period, when Prince Shotoku is alleged to have employed one of his retainers as a ninja.
Ninja as a group first began to be written about in 15th century feudal Japan as martial organizations predominately in the regions of Iga and Koga of central Japan, though the practice of guerilla warfare and undercover espionage operations goes back much further.
Ninja are said to have made use of weapons that could be easily concealed or disguised as common tools, the bo, and handclaws (shuko, neko-te tekagi) probably being the most famous, except for the amazing shuriken (throwing stars), popularized by comic book mail order advertisements.
