Nirvana was formed in 1987 by frontman Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, and released its debut album, Bleach, in 1989 on independent label Sub Pop. After signing to DGC records, a subsidiary of Geffen Records, the band released its second album, Nevermind, which became one of the best selling alternative albums of the 1990s[1][2] and popularized the Seattle grunge movement and alternative music.[3] The band's third album, In Utero, was also released by Geffen Records, though it was not as successful as Nevermind—nor did the members of the band expect that it would be.[4] Nirvana disbanded in 1994 after the apparent suicide of Cobain; since then several posthumous releases have been issued from the band.
