A Japanese domestic name for the Z series of sportcars. First appeared as a roadster in 1961, it wasn't until 1966 the name appeared in the US as a Fairlady 2000 but Yutaka Katayama protested, claiming to be sounding like the play My Fair Lady therefore the name was dropped when the 240Z came out, but the Japanese kept the name for their domestic markets


as the Datsun 2000 roadster, and all the Z-car incarnations, including the 240Z, 280ZX, 300ZX, and 350Z. The original Fairlady had severe vibration, bad brakes and other assorted problems. But, it did get good gas mileage. Getting the car up a hill was an ordeal. Datsun had tested the Fairlady on highways in California as a way to fix out the problems. The Datsun Fairlady helped establish Japanese cars in North America.
