Niulakita is the southernmost isle of Tuvalu, and the name of the only village on this island. It was bought by the UK in the mid-1900s to decrease the population density, and has a population (2002 census) of 35. There are four ponds or lakes and the village which has a maneapa (a village hall (or community hall) in Tuvalu, it is on each isle, and has also meeting and recreational functions). The isle has the form of an egg (horizontally) and a length of about 1 km.

Niulakita is a southern most island in the Tuvalu group and has no lagoon at all but only a swamp at its centre.
Niulakita has never had a permanent population of its own so it was well suited to being claimed by people from elsewhere.
Similarly, the Niutao council is responsible for the labourers at Niulakita.

Niulakita, the southern most island of the Tuvalu Group was named by Alvaro de Mendana in 1595 as La Solitaria; George Bennett, a Nantucket whaler in 1821 named it Independence; while others have called it Sophia and Rocky.
The first group of Niutao workers, with their wives and children, was sent to Niulakita in 1949 to cut copra.
This is because the genealogy of Niulakita does not go back to the extent that it does for the other islands in the Tuvalu Group.
