NO HANDS SOFTWARE was founded in August 1991 by two Macintosh programmers interested in information-related business software. Nick Gault, who co-authored SuperSpool and SuperLaserSpool, and Michael Reeds introduced their first No Hands product, Magnet, in September 1992.

Magnet is an “intelligent agent” that attracts files to specific locations at times specified by the user. Magnet helps automate and manage such tasks as backing up files and synchronizing information on different computers.

Even before Magnet was released, Gault and Andy Nuss had been working on a technology for distributing electronic documents called DigitalPaper. Farallon became interested in the technology and agreed to market the product once it was finished. But last year, the two parties agreed to terminate their relationship, and Farallon decided to develop its own competing technology, now called Replica. Last fall, No Hands acquired rights to DigitalPaper from Gault and Nuss (G&N Software at the time). Gault joined No Hands and marketing of the product soon began in earnest. The firm recruited Tony Stayner from SuperMac to direct the marketing effort, and when No Hands unveiled Common Ground at Macworld this past January it caused a stir by declaring Adobe Acrobat to be its only close competitor. In 1993, No Hands strengthened its management team by hiring Giacomo Marini, one of three founders of Logitech, to be its president and CEO. In addition to senior executives, the board of directors includes John Zeisler (the CEO of Pensoft) and two venture capitalists that have helped fund No Hands. Giacomo Marini is founder and Managing Partner of Cypress Ventures / CIR Ventures. ...

Common Ground Like Acrobat and Replica, Common Ground included two components: a printer driver and a Viewer. The two were sold together, much like Acrobat, at a suggested retail price of $190. A miniviewer is available free of charge and may be embedded with a DigitalPaper document when you print the file. The miniviewer enables the recipient to view, but not create or edit, DigitalPaper files.

Common Ground was released for Mac and Windows.

No Hands Software was later acquired by Hummingbird Communications.
