No Strings Attached is the second album by American boy band 'N Sync, released on March 21, 2000 (see 2000 in music). By selling more than 2.4 million copies in its debut week[1] , the album set a U.S. one-week sales record that remains intact to this day; with compact disc sales in decline, the record is not expected to be equaled or topped in the near future. Before the release of No Strings Attached, 'N Sync's second album, the band acrimoniously split from their old management and signed to Jive Records. The ensuing legal battle caused No Strings Attached to be delayed several times; initially, the album was slated to arrive as early as the fourth quarter of 1999. The first single, "Bye Bye Bye" was serviced to radio stations before the release date for the album was finalized; as a result, the song appeared more than 2 months before the album finally hit shelves. The song was a radio smash, and the shifting dates only served to increase anticipation for the album. When the album finally appeared, it flew off shelves, setting records for most albums sold in one day (over 1 million) and most albums sold in a single week (2.41 million), shattering the record set less than one year prior by rival band the Backstreet Boys, with their 1999 album 'Millennium'. The title of the album was a reference to the band's newfound freedom from Lou Pearlman and their former management team. In interviews, the band, and Justin Timberlake in particular, referred to the style of music as "dirty pop", which subsequently entered the pop-culture lexicon and served as the inspiration for the band's future single, "Pop". The album spun off three U.S. top 10 singles: The aforementioned "Bye Bye Bye"; the number one smash "It's Gonna Be Me", and the ballad "This I Promise You."
