Encyclopedia > Nomos Alpha

Nomos Alpha (1966) is a piece for solo cello composed by Iannis Xenakis in 1965, commissioned by Radio Bremen for cellist Siegfried Palm, and dedicated to mathematicians Aristoxenus of Tarentum, Evariste Galois, and Felix Klein (DeLio 1985, p.xii).

The structure is in part, Level I, determined by group theory, specifically the 24 element octahedral group structure and is in 24 sections, with each fourth section, Level II, not being determined by group stucture and rather a "continuous evolution of register" (ibid, p.23).

Nomos Ludwig Alpha Sapphire Back - WatchBuys (400 words)
A classic favorite among the Nomos line, and a personal favorite because of the handsome Roman numeral dial.
During our recent visit to the Nomos workshops, we saw first hand the production of these movements, including all of the intricate operations necessary to produce the individual parts, cut and clean the metal, and create the movements using two separate lactations in the very small village of Glashütte, Germany.
To create the parts for such a movement in-house is an extraordinary achievement for a company of Nomos' size.
