Nonesuch Records is currently allied with Warner Bros. Records even though it is an Elektra Records subsidiary. Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records in 1950, founded Nonesuch in 1964 to license European recordings of classical music. Holzman engaged Teresa (Tracey) Sterne, a fine pianist and former child prodigy, to run the new label. Tracey Sterne soon expanded her brief to include new recordings as well as the licensed European material. While she could have assumed an impressive title as the head of the label, she was content to credit herself on the album covers as "coordinator." When David Lewiston asked her "Why?", she explained that she wanted to be treated as a musician collaborating with her peers. Over the next fifteen years, until she was fired by Warner Music's managers, she created a catalog of remarkable depth, spanning not only the gamut of Western music from Ancient to Modern, but also distinguished music from around the world. In 1970 Holzman sold Elektra and Nonesuch to Kinney National Company, an enterprise formed by the merger of Campbell Funeral Homes, Kinney Parking Lots, and National Cleaning Contractors. Then in the early '70s this entity purchased the shell of Warner Pictures, and morphed into the Warner which became so prominent in the last quarter of the 20th century. It was the managers engaged by this entity to run Warner Music who were responsible for the banishment of Tracey Sterne in 1979. Afterwards she tried to create her own record label without success, and she worked at WNYC Radio as Music Director for some time. As the twentieth century came to a close, she discovered that she had contracted ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and she died in 2000 after a year of dreadful suffering. Warner Bros. ...

In the late 1960s, the Nonesuch Explorer Series made Nonesuch a pioneer in the field of world music before the term was even invented. The series, which Nonesuch released from 1967 to 1984, consists of field recordings made primarily in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe (though it seems a shame to ignore treasures like Finbar Furey's uillean -- Irish bagpipe -- album, and another of Swedish folk fiddling, just because they don't fit into those categories). For non-travelers, it was the first exposure to musical idioms such as music produced by a gamelan. In 1977, a few of the recordings were chosen for the Voyager Golden Record, and sent into outer space aboard the Voyager spacecraft. The analogue original recordings have been digitized, and the series, remastered and with new packaging, is currently being re-released in CD format. World music is, most generally, all the music in the world [1]. More specifically, the term is currently used to classify the many genres of non-western music which were previously described as folk music or ethnic music. Succinctly, it can be described as local music from out there [2...
