Zuiderzee Works (4356 words)
The Noordoostpolder was considered to be sufficiently drained in September 1942 and the developmental process was then put in motion on the 480 km² of new land.
At the heart of the Noordoostpolder, where the three main drainage canals intersect, is the town of Emmeloord (1943).
More farming communities, similar to the Noordoostpolder, had originally been planned, but changing agricultural needs and increased motorised mobility meant many weren't necessary and thus their number was eventually reduced to just two, even though for one non-existent village, Larsen, building had been about to start when it was cancelled.
