Nordeste's major cities are almost all on the Atlantic coast.
Nordeste has a rich culture, with its unique constructions in the old centers of Salvador, Recife and Olinda, dance (frevo and maracatu), music (axé, forró) and unique cuisine.
The Nordeste is the poorest region of Brazil, with the worst HDI rates of the country, mainly in the rural areas, which suffer from long periods without rain.
Nordeste is located east of Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo, E of Ribeira Grande and NE of Furnas and is linked with a road connecting Ponta Delgada and Lagoa and west to Ribeira Grande.
Nordeste has a school, a lyceum, a gymnasium, banks, a post office, a small port and a square or a plaza (praça).
The westernmost parish is Salga, the easternmost is Nordeste.
