Dr. Norman Maldonado, a native of the mountain town of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, is one of Puerto Rico's top hematologists and served as President of the University of Puerto Rico. In 1992, he chaired the pro-statehood New Progressive Party's platform-drafting committee. Before becoming UPR President, he helped Gov. Pedro Rossello organize Puerto Rico's health reform system.
