North Chicago is a city located in Lake County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 35,918.


North Chicago has the headquarters of Abbott Laboratories and is the location of the Naval Station Great Lakes.


Geography

North Chicago is located at 42°19'20" North, 87°51'16" West (42.322272, -87.854470)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.3 km˛ (7.8 mi˛). 20.3 km˛ (7.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.13% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 35,918 people, 7,661 households, and 5,577 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,771.1/km˛ (4,586.3/mi˛). There are 8,377 housing units at an average density of 413.1/km˛ (1,069.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 47.72% White, 36.26% African American, 0.84% Native American, 3.59% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 7.66% from other races, and 3.79% from two or more races. 18.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,661 households out of which 46.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 18.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.09 and the average family size is 3.64.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 34.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 9.2% from 45 to 64, and 4.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 156.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 176.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $38,180, and the median income for a family is $40,485. Males have a median income of $24,480 versus $23,736 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,564. 15.1% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.3% of those under the age of 18 and 15.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
