North East is a town located in Cecil County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,733.

North East is located at 39°36'1" North, 75°56'32" West (39.600342, -75.942146)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 km˛ (1.6 mi˛). 4.1 km˛ (1.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.86% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,733 people, 1,081 households, and 701 families residing in the town. The population density is 667.9/km˛ (1,730.8/mi˛). There are 1,215 housing units at an average density of 296.9/km˛ (769.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 93.82% White, 3.18% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,081 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 27.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the town the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $39,563, and the median income for a family is $39,417. Males have a median income of $34,545 versus $26,768 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,287. 15.2% of the population and 14.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
