North Hamgyŏng (Hamgyŏng-pukto) is a province of North Korea. The province was formed in 1896 from the northern half of the former Hamgyŏng Province, remained a province of Korea until 1945, then became a province of North Korea. Its capital is Ch'ŏngjin. McCune-Reischauer romanization is one of the two most widely used Korean language romanization systems, along with the Revised Romanization of Korean, which replaced (a modified) McCune-Reischauer as the official romanization system in South Korea in 2000. ...

The province is bordered by China on the north, South Hamgyong on the southwest, and Ryanggang on the west. On the east is the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea). There is also a short border with Russia. Rasŏn Directly Governed City, in the northeast corner of the province, was separated from North Hamgyŏng in 1993.
