Nord-Kivu is a province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its provincial capital is Goma. It borders Orientale to the north-west, Maniema to the west, and Sud-Kivu to the south. To the east it borders Uganda and Rwanda.
It is bounded in the west by the Democratic Republic of Congo and Lake Kivu, on the north by Uganda, on the east by Tanzania, and on the south by Burundi.

The current war in NorthKivu is being fought in the context of a very volatile security situation complicated by the presence of various rebel groups and by the ongoing fighting between those groups and the national armies of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.
The ethnic divisions in NorthKivu, based both on fear and on competition over meagre resources, and further complicated by the political, military and ethnic problems of neighbouring states, are the most significant factors in the destabilisation of Kivu.
The NorthKivu political class cites the example of the appointment of Gaetan Kakudji, a relative of President Kabila and former governor of Shaba, to the key post of Minister of State for Internal Affairs as a sign of nepotism.
