History

There used to be an underground arcade near the north entry between Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue that was only accessible by escalator. An Oshman's Sporting Goods store leased the entire space in the late 1980's and moved the escalator to the main corrider of pedestrian traffic for prime access. The Oshman's closed in the 1990's when it opened a superstore across the highway (now The Sports Authority), and the underground space has since been closed off (though retail space still exists above the closed off arcade). The Sports Authority is the Americas third-largest sporting goods retailer after Wal-Mart and Dicks Sporting Goods. ...

The mall went through an extensive renovation in the mid-1980's when two new wings were added that included Marshall Field's, Saks Fifth Avenue, and a food court. Three multi-level parking garages were also added to alleviate the lack of available parking during busy shopping days. (The garage between Dillard's and Saks Fifth Avenue replaced the movie theater.) Foley's also expanded their store by extending the north-end of its store. The Texaco fuel station in the existing underground garage at the corner of Rector and McCullough streets was closed during the renovations. Joske's was sold to Dillard's in 1987, Frost Bros. declared bankruptcy in 1989, and Marshall Field's exited the Texas market in 1997. It was announced in 2005 that Macy's would close their 178,000-square-foot, three-level store at North Star and rebrand the Foley's store as Macy's. [1] A new retailer for the space has not been announced. Joskes, founded in 1867, was a department store in San Antonio, Texas. ...
