North Syracuse is a village located in Onondaga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 6,862.


The Village of North Syracuse is partly in the Town of Cicero. US Route 11 passes through the village.

History

The village was originally called Centerville and changed to it present name in 1880. It became an incorporated village in 1925. On July 18, 1846, the United States' first plank road opened in North Syracuse, primarily for salt transportation.


Geography

The village is north of the City of Syracuse, New York.


North Syracuse is located at 43°8'0" North, 76°7'56" West (43.133334, -76.132321)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.1 km˛ (2.0 mi˛). 5.1 km˛ (2.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,862 people, 2,999 households, and 1,751 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,351.8/km˛ (3,496.2/mi˛). There are 3,137 housing units at an average density of 618.0/km˛ (1,598.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 94.93% White, 1.36% African American, 0.86% Native American, 1.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,999 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% are non-families. 34.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the village the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $37,031, and the median income for a family is $47,853. Males have a median income of $36,292 versus $24,484 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,906. 10.2% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
