North Vacherie is a census-designated place located in St. James Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,411.

Geography

North Vacherie is located at 29°59'36" North, 90°42'51" West (29.993379, -90.714089)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 30.1 km² (11.6 mi²). 28.5 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.25% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,411 people, 763 households, and 618 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 84.5/km² (219.1/mi²). There are 829 housing units at an average density of 29.1/km² (75.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 24.55% White, 75.36% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.04% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 763 households out of which 41.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 26.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.16 and the average family size is 3.57.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $31,154, and the median income for a family is $32,404. Males have a median income of $37,700 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $13,032. 21.9% of the population and 20.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
