Older buildings in the region commonly feature lodges built of stones picked from local fields and log cabins.

The next 4 decades were the golden age of lake resorts of the North Woods. The influx of families continued towards the north, and the now familiar log-cabin look with massive beams, fieldstone fireplace, and boulder foundations became synonymous with the North Woods. North Woods also present a number of cross-country ski trails. The North Woods also draw hordes of snowmobilers. Boozing and snowmobiling at racetrack speeds might sound like an absurd way to spend a weekend, but it is a popular pastime in North Woods. This sometimes assumes a menacing proportion; a trip down a North Woods highway on winter weekends can be revealing, with swarms of snowmobiles parked in front of bars. Though not everyone inside may be drinking and not everyone drinking may be drinking to excess. But plenty of people become problems for others, resulting into injuries and causalities. Inspite of this, the fact remains that North Woods have served as great recreational spot for millions.

However, gradually, the North Woods is undergoing a metamorphosis and its character is getting changed. Silently and without any fanfare, without attracting any public attention, large areas of privately owned real estate, which were managed by timber and mining companies and open to the general public for sports and recreation, are being divided up, sold off and developed. It is estimated by Conservation and natural-resource officials that around 400,000 ha (1 million acres) of large, undeveloped tracts of Minnesota North Woods are at risk. This would result into: 1) such land becoming off limits to the general public for hunting and recreation, 2) taken out for timber production for mills, and 3) resultant development may have an adverse affect on birds, wildlife, etc. As reported by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, since 1989 around 160,000 ha (400,000 acres) of private forest owned by individuals and families have been lost permanently to development such as house and cabin sites, driveways, and roads.
