Encyclopedia > Northern Territory University

Charles Darwin University (CDU) is located in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. It was created on 1 January 2004 from the amalgamation of Northern Territory University (NTU) of Darwin and Centralian College of Alice Springs. The predecessor institution, NTU, was founded in January 1989 from the Darwin Institute of Technology (founded 1974) and the University College of the Northern Territory (1987).

The primary campuses are located in the Darwin suburbs of Casuarina and Palmerston, in addition to Mataranka Station north of Katherine. There are 23 areas of study offered by the university's four faculties:

  • Indigenous Research and Education
  • Law, Business and Arts
  • Science, Information Technology & Education
  • Technology and Industrial Education

In addition, the university has 'links' with the Menzies School of Health Research, a joint venture between the university, the Menzies Foundation and the University of Sydney, located at the Royal Darwin Hospital, also in Casuarina.

On 21 August 2003, the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly passed the Charles Darwin University Bill, merging Alice Springs' Centralian College with the university to form Charles Darwin University from 1 January 2004. The inaugural university council meeting [1] (http://www.cdu.edu.au/newsroom/stories/2003/november/leadership/index.html) was held on 26 November 2003.

The university is named after Charles Robert Darwin, a celebrated English scientist.
