Encyclopedia > Northern Union

The Rugby Football League (RFL) is the governing body for Rugby League in the United Kingdom. It administers the Great Britain international side, the Challenge Cup, the Rugby League National Leagues and Super League (Europe). The amateur game is administered in association with the British Amateur Rugby League Association (BARLA).

The RFL was formed in 1895 as the Northern Rugby Football Union, but was more usually termed simply the Northern Union (NU). (See History of rugby league for more detail on the formation of the NU). It adopted the name Rugby Football League in 1922.

The name Rugby Football League also refers to the main league competition run by the organisation. This has since been supplanted by Super League and the Rugby League National Leagues.

Northern has, in many respects been something of a 'sleeping giant' in the rugby sense and of course, during the 1970s and early 80s lived in the shadow of their highly successful near neighbours and 'olde enemy', Gosforth RFC.

The Northern Dimension in the external and cross-border policies of the European Union reflects the EU’s relations with Russia (and particularly North-west Russia) in the Baltic Sea region and Arctic Sea region.
The Northern Dimension addresses the specific challenges and opportunities arising in those regions and aims to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the EU and its member states, the northern countries associated with the EU under the EEA (Norway and Iceland) and the Russian Federation.
The Northern Dimension concept covers a broad and diverse geographic area, stretching from the Arctic and sub-Arctic to the southern shores of the Baltic, and from North-West Russia in the East to Iceland and Greenland in the West.
