The election was won by the opposition centre-left Red-Green Coalition, which took 87 seats, dominated by the Labour Party's 61 seats.
The red-green coalition was the winner of the election and formed a majority government, with Jens Stoltenberg as prime minister, on October 17, 2005, as soon as a national budget for 2006 had been proposed by the old government.
The Norwegian move was disapproved by the European powers, and, at the head of an army, Marshal Jean Bernadotte, later King Charles XIV John, persuaded Norway to accept the Treaty of Kiel.
Norwegian nationalism increased, and the Storting complained that Swedish treatment of Norway was not consistent with the spirit of the Act of Union and with the status of Norway as an equal state.
The parliamentaryelections held in September 1961 resulted in the failure of the Labour Party for the first time since 1935 to win a majority of seats, although it kept its place as the leading party.
