Encyclopedia > Nose job

Rhinoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that is used to improve the appearance of a person's nose. It is commonly called a "nose job." Rhinos is the Greek word for nose and plastikos to shape, so literally it means to "shape the nose".

Rhinoplasty was pioneered by Jacques Joseph in the 19th century to help those who "suffered from a 'Jewish nose.'" Jacques Joseph was himself of Jewish descent and his reason was not anti-semitic but a reflection of his time and culture.

Rhinoplasty can be performed under a general anesthetic or with local anesthetic, depending on patient or doctor preference. Incisions are made inside the rim of the nostrils. Sometimes, tiny, inconspicuous incisions are also made on the rim of the nose. Soft tissues of the nose are then separated from the underlying structures, and the cartilage and bone causing the deformity are reshaped.
