In present day English, it is used to draw the attention of the reader to a certain (side) aspect or detail of the subject on hand, translating it as "pay attention" or "take notice". It is often written in the abbreviated form: N.B. To my utter amazement it is totally unknown to a class full of undergraduate students at a leading US public university, and to several academic colleagues! My British doctoral student however had no problem with it!!


Nota Bene is also the name of a suite of word-processing and related software, derived from XyWrite. A program that runs under Windows, it contains features aimed at an academic writing audience, including multilingual character sets, reference-managing tools, and textbase creation capability. XyWrite is a word processor for DOS and Windows produced by XyQuest in the mid 1980s and later by The Technology Group. ...
