Em 1819-1820 chegavam a Nova Friburgo 30 famílias de colonos, formando-se o núcleo inicial da povoação.
Finalmente, a 8 de janeiro de 1890, Nova Friburgo foi elevada à categoria de Cidade, tendo sua população aumentado com a chegada de imigrantes italianos, portuguêses e sírios.
A partir de 1910, Nova Friburgo que até então devia seu progresso ao desenvolvimento da lavoura e ao seu clima seco ideal para cidade de veraneio, via chegar vários cidadãos de iniciativa, tais como Conselheiros Julius Arp, Maximilian Falck e William Peacock Denis, que foram os pioneiros da era industrial friburguense.
