Area:

1,748 km²total area. The population density is 608 persons per square kilometer. Total agricultural area is 52540 hectors. The main source of income of the region is agriculture. Earlier, Nowsehra was old Tehsil of Peshawer. It was converted into a district in 1988.

Brief History

This is the third District of the Peshawer division, which was separated from Peshawer. This district is also called the link between Central Asia and India. It is of more significance because of being situated at the riverbank of Sindh (Indus). Old Peshawer was famous due to the large industrial basis of Nowshehra Tehsil. There are big industries there, such as Paper International Ltd (previously known as Adam jee paper and board mill) Aman Garh, Nizampur Cement Company (AWT), Fauji Corn Complex at Jehangira, Nowshera Sheet Glass Industries at Adamzai, Pakistan Tobacco Company at Akora Khattak, Associated Industries Ltd. at Amangarh, Ferozsons pharmaceutical at Amangarh, Locomotive factory at Risalpur, and Special Export Processing Zone at Risalpur. Similarly, a number of various industrial units situated at Pabbi, Risalpur, Amangarh, Akora Khattak, Jehangira and Chirat areas are also making progress from industrial point of view. Nowshera is superior in the military training and railway locomotive factory. There are many opportunities for industry in the area. This golden district played main role for political asylum for Afghanistan refugees. Several temporary camps were built at various locations within the jurisdiction of district Nowshera for Afghan refugees. In addition to the strong industrial foundation, historical scenes are available for interest of tourists. River Kabul runs through Nowshera City and combines with River Sindh at Kund, which is worth seeing. A number of lush green parks and beautiful places, such as Cherat, Manki Sharif, Saidukhel, Company Baagh, Kund park, Manglot wildlife park at Nizampur and Azakhel park provide excellent scenic views and always become sources of rejuvenation to the visitors. Likewise, Bahadur Baba ziarat, Kaka Sahib ziarat, Khushal Khan Khattak memorial library and Maqbara (tomb) all are worth visiting. This district is rewarded by progress due to constant investment.


A number of well-known figures of national and international repute belong to this place. Sheikh Rehamkar Syed Kasteer Gul Known as Kaka Sahib the most respected Saint in the N.W.F.P and Afghanistan is buried here. A great poet, brave warlord and chieftain of major Khattak tribe Khushal khan khattak, was born here. Another well regarded spiritual leader, Pir of Manki Sharif, Maulana Abdul Haq; the founder of Daral Uloom Haqqania, Maulana Samiul Haq, Maulana Anwaarul Haq, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Maulana Mujahid, Maulana Sher Ali Shah, Ex-Finance Minister & Senator Syed Sartaj Aziz Kakakhel, Ex-Interior Minister Major General (rtd.) Naseer Ullah Baber belong to Nowshera. Some renowned poets and writers, such as Samandar Khan Samandar, Abdullah Ustad and Ajmal Khattak also belong to the same place. Similarly, a number of other political stalwarts, such as Mian Jamal Shah Kakakhel,Wali muhammed khan misri banda, pervaiz Ahmed khan misri banda,Iftikhar Ahmed khan Advocate, Mian Yahya Sha Kakakhel, Pervez Khattak,Aslam Shah,Waqas Shahzad, Jan Muhammad Khattak, Nasrullah Khattak, Mian Muzaffer Shah, Liaqat Shabab(Ex Driver of Aslam Shah & Company) Mian Iftikhar, Ishaaq Khattak, Hamidul Haq belong to this district.


The local government, headed by the Nazim-e-Ala, supervises Nowshera district. The local government setup is comprised of 47 union councils, 12 town councils, 1 tehsil council and a district assembly. In addition, district coordination officer (DCO) bridges local government and Govt. functionaries including; administering planning & finance activities of various developmental projects for the benefit of the masses, like; allocation of funds for various civic amenities, education, healthcare, W&S, agriculture etc.


There is a district police headquarters headed by the district police officer, and 8 police stations functioning in the district jurisdiction. These police stations are situated in Nizampur, Khairabad, Akora, Nowshera cantt., Nowshera city, Risalpur, Azakhel and Pabbi.


In order to provide healthcare facilities, several hospitals are functioning in Nowshera. DHQ, CMH, Cantonment hospital, LRBT Akora and Pabbi satellite complex are most prominent. Besides, various basic health units and rural health centers are also functioning at various towns of Nowshera district. In addition, there are a number of other medical centers providing healthcare services to the masses in private capacity.


Nowshera district also enjoys prominence over other districts and maintains a good reputation throughout NWFP on account of excellent educational institutions. Government Post graduate college for boys, Government Post Graduate College for girls, PAF Academy college, Nisar Shaheed college, F.G. Public High Schools, The City School, ILM, Suleman Nadvi School Pabbi, Sena Public School Pabbi, Presentation Convent High School are some of the examples.


Main clans

Khattak is the main tribe in Disst nowshera. Kakakhels Syeds/ Miagaan are the most prominent religious family who descends from Sheikh Rehamkar Syed Kasteer Gul, known as Kaka Sahib.

Geographical Location

Nowshera cantt and city are situated at oppsite sides of the bank of Kabul River. On its North-East Disst Attock of Punjab province is situated. On Its North there are Sawabi and Mardan Disst. On Northwest is the CHarsadda Disst. In the west is Peshawar Disst. On South there touches the Kohat Disst boundary. FR Kohat boundary i.e Darra Adam Khel also borders with Nizampur and Cherat areas Of Nowhsera Disst.

Places to See

Kana Khel Bahadar Baba a place worth visiting. Tourists from all the country and especially from the province flock to the area on occasions like eid and other religious festivals. The place has a unique history. One can enjoy and may wish to stay when once the place is visited. It is just at a distance of 20 minutes, the road is a bit hard but it doesn't stop people to spend their holidays at the adventurous hill station. Kund Park: Located right on the junction between the river Kabul and the Indus, kund park is a nice family outing place. Khushal Khan Khattak's mazar Other places include Cherat, Manki Sharif, Saidukhel, Company Bagh, Manglot wildlife park at Nizampur and Azakhel park provide excellent scenic views and always become sources of rejuvenation to the visitors. As well as Kaka Sahib ziarat and Hazrat Shaikh Shahbaz Baba Ziarat at PABBI main Bazar.
