Themes "Numb" talks about someone who has lost themself and forgotten who they are due to the fact that other people are pressuring them into being what they want them to be. The song is being told supposedly by a young person, as the music video shows several scenes centered around a young girl and her family. "Numb" has been interpreted as being about how young people (mainly teenagers) feel pressure in being able to live up to many expectations, especially relatives (most likely parents). The lyrics "All I want to do/Is be more like me and be less like you" show the much demanded freedom that most underage people would like. The message brought out from the bridge tell about the hardships that the directed person has felt. Even though the stereotype of teens who are depressed or sick of their lives still exists, it doesn't lose its meaning to that individual.
History This song, like "My December", "Pushing Me Away" and "Crawling," features Mike Shinoda's rapping for a very short time: in fact, Mike only has two separate single lines of rap which are repeated throughout the song, although he does sing backup when the song is performed live. The music video follows the domestic and social problems faced during a day in the life of a young (portrayed by Briana Evigan), unpopular female student. The girl apparently spends much of her time drawing pictures, revealing that she probably has dreams of becoming an artist. She is largely ignored and ridiculed at school, considering that when she is told off by the teacher for drawing in class everybody laughs at her, when she trips on the stairs nobody stops to help her up, and the fact that when she tries to join a group of girls at a lunch table they immediately get up and leave. There are also self-inflicted cut marks on her arms, which actually say "NUMB" - the title of the song. She is shown near the end of the video rubbing the marks after a stressful day, and then deciding to work off her stress by throwing paint instead. At the end of the video, the girl runs into the church that the band was singing in, almost as if she heard them. This article does not cite any references or sources. ...
