Encyclopedia > Nyaw language
Jump to: navigation, search

The Nyaw language is a dialect of the Issan or Lao language with a few vocabulary, tonal and pronunciation differences. Speakers of the Nyaw language can be found mostly in the northeast portion of Thailand, and central Laos. In Thailand this language group is increesingly becoming integrated into the mainstream Issan language. It is a good likelihood that in 25 years very few true Nyaw speakers will remain. This is due to an aggressive campaign by the Thai government to modernize all Thai people, as well as due to outside influences of television, Internet and local radio broadcasts. Most younger members of northeastern tribal groups in Thailand prefer to be called Thai's rather than by their traditional tribal group.
