The original provincial regiments (landskapsregementen) had been raised raised by splitting the old Grand regiments (Storregementen, also "regiments of the land" (landsregementen), organized by Gustav II Adolph at the end of the 1610s, forming 21 infantry and eight cavalry regiments as written in the Swedish constitution of 1634. The regiment was made of two battalions, each with four squadrons:

The Southern Battalion (Södra bataljonen) comprised the Helsing Squadron, the Raseborg Squadron, the Major's Squadron or Borgå Squadron and the "Life Squadron" (Livkskvadron). 
The Northern Battalion (Södra bataljonen) comprised the Lieutenant-colonel's Squadron, the Lower Hållola Squadron, the Upper Hållola Squadron and the Säxmäki Squadron.

The other Swedish cavalry regiments from Finland were:

In the spring of 1700 the regiment was transferred to Wellingk's army corps in Livonia. From 1702 on, the regiment, with more or less 2 companies, had joined the main army. In 1705 - 1706 it was part of Rehnskiöld's corps. After the Battle of Poltava on June 28, 1709, the regiment was present at the capitulation in Perevolochna three days later. After Poltava, the Regiment got to be reconstituted and doubled in size. It was then stationed with the Army in Finland. Nylands och Tavastehus läns kavalleriregemente (Nyland and Tavastehus County Cavalry Regiment), was a Swedish Army cavalry regiment located in the county of Nyland and Tavastehus that traced its origins back to the 17th Century.
The regiment's soldiers were conscripted mainly from the county of Nyland and Tavastehus.

Nyland and Tavastehus County, Nylands och Tavastehus län or Uudenmaan ja Hämeen lääni, was a County (län) of Sweden (now in modern Finland) from 1634 to 1808, named after Nyland and Tavastehus.
Part of the Satakunta district was joined to Nyland and Tavastehus from the Björneborg County, while the Övre Hollola district went to Kymmene.
After the Treaty of Fredrikshamn in 1809 it continued to be a County of the Grand Duchy of Finland until 1831 when it was split into Nyland County and Tavastehus County respectively.
