Oak Ridge is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area located in Orange County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 22,349.


Geography

Oak Ridge is located at 28°28'29" North, 81°25'15" West (28.474596, -81.420738)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.2 km˛ (4.3 mi˛). 10.8 km˛ (4.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 3.48% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,349 people, 7,389 households, and 5,379 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,074.3/km˛ (5,370.9/mi˛). There are 7,791 housing units at an average density of 723.1/km˛ (1,872.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 43.08% White, 28.44% African American, 0.41% Native American, 5.67% Asian, 0.29% Pacific Islander, 13.92% from other races, and 8.19% from two or more races. 41.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,389 households out of which 41.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 21.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 18.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.40.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 12.7% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.0 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $30,290, and the median income for a family is $31,422. Males have a median income of $21,991 versus $18,573 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $12,347. 19.6% of the population and 17.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

School Cuts Students; Grade Goes Up (1458 words)
Oak Ridge High School in Orlando boosted its school grade from an F to a D last year after purging its attendance roll of dozens of low-performing and often-absent students in the weeks leading up to the FCAT.
Oak Ridge, with its many poor and minority students, had slipped from a C to an F in the years before Wells was brought on board to turn things around.
She said the department was not aware of the Oak Ridge situation and knew of no cases in the state where attendance had been manipulated to affect the FCAT.

Formerly serving as the ARD-19, OAK RIDGE was originally constructed by the Pacific Bridge Company, Alameda, California, in 1943-44 with a length of 488 feet, a beam of 80 feet and a lifting capacity of 6,800 tons.
OAK RIDGE was "underway" once again in May 1997 enroute to her new homeport, Submarine Base, New London/Groton, CT. Upon arrival she was moored at pier 17 north.
