Oakland is a borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 12,466. The current mayor is John Szabo. The Town Council members are Don Burns, John Biale, Jim Geraghty, Matt Kazmierczak, Leo McGuire, and Betsy Stagg.


Geography

Oakland is located at 41°1'44" North, 74°14'14" West (41.028884, -74.237274)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 22.7 km˛ (8.8 mi˛). 22.3 km˛ (8.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.71% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,466 people, 4,255 households, and 3,565 families residing in the borough. The population density is 559.7/km˛ (1,448.9/mi˛). There are 4,345 housing units at an average density of 195.1/km˛ (505.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 94.76% White, 0.78% African American, 0.06% Native American, 2.70% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 3.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,255 households out of which 39.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.4% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.2% are non-families. 12.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the borough the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $86,629, and the median income for a family is $93,695. Males have a median income of $62,336 versus $41,092 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $35,252. 1.7% of the population and 0.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
