The Oasis of Peace, known as Neve Shalom (נווה שלום) in Hebrew and Wahat al-Salam in Arabic is a village jointly founded by Israeli Jews and Arabs (Palestinians) in an attempt to show that the two cultures can live side by side peacefully. Hebrew is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken by 6 million people mainly in Israel, parts of the Palestinian territories, the United States and by Jewish communities around the world. ... Its name originating from a phrase in the Hebrew Bible that "My people shall dwell in an oasis of peace", the idea of united village was first proposed by Father Bruno an Egyptian Catholic (although Jewish by birth) who set up a home at the site of the new village in 1972 on land rented from the Trappist Latrun Monastery for the cost of 25 US Dollar for a hundred year lease, and waited for others to join him. 11th century manuscript of the Hebrew Bible with Targum Hebrew Bible refers to the common portions of the Jewish and Christian canons. ... Father Bruno Hussar; founder of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam, Father Bruno derived the name from the book of Isaiah (32:18) My people shall dwell in an Oasis of Peace. Father Bruno passed away on February 8, 1996. ... It currently has 184 inhabitants with 300 people (half Jewish, half Arab) on the waiting list for places in the village. While the village wishes to expand it is opposed by the current right-wing Israeli government.


The village school teaches both Arabic and Hebrew and places are in heavy demand, the yearly intake includes hundreds of children from neighbouring areas. Although usually described as an oasis, Fayyum is not fed by underground water, like the Western Desert oases further south west, but by water from the Nile transported to this natural triangular depression by a series of canals.
The result of this and further developments by Amenemhet III (1842-1797 BC), who showed great interest in the area and built a pyramid at Hawara, was lake Moeris (Great Lake), twice the present size and teeming with fish, and an agricultural area to the south renowned for its rich and varied crops.
