Odessa is located at 38°59'49" North, 93°57'18" West (38.996962, -93.954975)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.0 km˛ (3.5 mi˛). 9.0 km˛ (3.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water, although the city has now rebuilt Lake Venita (statistics unavailable).


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,818 people, 1,887 households, and 1,290 families residing in the city. The population density is 533.0/km˛ (1,381.7/mi˛). There are 2,011 housing units at an average density of 222.5/km˛ (576.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 97.09% White, 1.18% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,887 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.07.


In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,007, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $35,476 versus $23,047 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,455. 9.9% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 14.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Odessa is home of the Odessa R-7 School District. The school's mascot is the bulldog.
